INTRODUCTION
MASwings - East Malaysia’s first commuter airline, caters to the air travel needs of Sabah and Sarawak’s travelers by providing affordable fares, convenient schedules and connections within and across the two states in Borneo as well as the Federal Territory of Labuan complementing its tagline; MASwings – Pulse of Borneo.
The Airline was officially launched on 1st October 2007. Its operation is mainly focused on the Rural Area Services (RAS) routes within Sabah and Sarawak, which connects the local community of their hometown to the big cities. It supports the aspirations of Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan and contributes to the socio- economic development of the region.
Being a subsidiary of the Malaysian Aviation Group, MASwings also links with Malaysia Airlines Berhad and Firefly for greater global connectivity.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
MASwings first operated with four 50-seater Fokker-50 and four 19-seater Twin Otter aircraft, which were used to serve a network of 22 destinations in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
By 2009, the Fokker-50 fleets were phased out from operation in favor of newer aircraft, which is the ATR72-500, to serve the community better.
After 5 years since its inception, in the year 2012, MASwings began spreading its wings into Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines under the East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) countries.
FLEET & DESTINATIONS
MASwings fleet includes 8 ATR 72-500 and 6 DHC- 6-400 Twin Otter aircrafts.
The airlines’ six DHC-6- 400 Twin Otter aircrafts operating out of Miri, form the Rural Air Services, providing a vital lifeline to some of the most remote rural communities in Sarawak.
They fly regular scheduled services to 11 rural STOLports (STOL short take-off and landing) many of which are inaccessible by road.
As of today, MASwings serves a total of 22 destinations including Brunei on code share with main bases in Kota Kinabalu and Miri.
AWARDS
MASwings is proud of the recognitions and accolades awarded such as Sarawak State Hornbill Special Award (2012), Sabah State Special Tourism Minister Award (2013), Certificates from Viking Air Limited and Pratt and Whitney for MASwings Viking Twin-Otter (2017), ATR Fleet Leader in Number of Flights Per Aircraft Per Day in The World (2017) and two awards from the Malaysia Book of Records (2018) for MASwings under the purview of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia being the Rural Air Services (RAS) operator.
